Safe Internet for Children – Basic Rules

  • The Internet is a great place to discover all sort of things, chatting with people from all over the world, finding new friends and great fun. Be careful though – you risk a lot if you don’t follow basic rules.
  • Never give out your personal information (name, address). It's like giving someone keys to your apartment!
  • Your password protects your privacy, keep it secret and don’t share it with anyone – even not with your best friend or with a person that looks like a clerk.
  • Finding new friends online is great but rather tell your parents who are your new friends.
  • If you want to meet a person you know over the Internet, ask your parents permission and don’t go to the meeting without any adults.
  • There are so many great things about the Net but there are also many bad things! If you feel embarrassed after seeing something on the Internet, don’t hesitate and confide in your parents or a teacher.
  • Chatting may be very funny but you don’t have to be stuck in the discussion if you feel embarrassed or endangered. Remember, you are the master of the situation!
  • You have your rights! Know your rights and ask the others to respect them.
  • If you let your parents or teachers know what you are doing, you may notice they will be calmer when they realize how responsibly you behave when surfing the Internet.
